Week 16<br />

Lecture: The development theory. Historical approaches of studies on national<br />

development.<br />

Class Activity: Discussion on the concept of national development<br />

Required reading: Research at the Unesco Institute <strong>for</strong> Statistics website <strong>for</strong> the<br />

Institute’s most recent global literacy statistics.<br />

Week 17<br />

Guest lecturer: Professor of international relations to present main development<br />

topics.<br />

Writing Assignment: Students will write a 45 lines’ news story on their country’s<br />

literacy situation compared to another country from a list indicated by the instructor.<br />

Required reading: Potter’s (2005) – chapters chosen by instructors<br />

Week 18<br />

Lecture: Media organizations and the international coverage of development issues<br />

Class Activity: Discussion on media literacy and/or media influence on the audience.<br />

Reporting / writing Assignment: Students will develop a news story on the influence<br />

of mass media in at least 2 <strong>countries</strong> from a list indicated by the instructor.<br />

Required reading: Naji’s (2006) report on citizens and media.<br />

Week 19<br />

Lecture: The status of the mass media in <strong>developing</strong> nations; newspaper readership,<br />

radio and television audiences.<br />

Class Activity: Development <strong>journalism</strong> versus mass media in <strong>developing</strong> <strong>countries</strong><br />

Reporting / writing Assignment: Research in the websites of The World Bank and<br />

of the United Nations Development Program to identify sources <strong>for</strong> news stories on<br />

development.<br />

Week 20<br />

Class Activity: Development issues: how journalists may cover environment and<br />

health issues.<br />

External Activity: Visit a local NGO (or a local embassy or consulate) which develops<br />

projects related to environmental issues.<br />

Required reading: Research in the website of Independent Media Center
