Reporting and writing (Tier 2): This course is designed to lead students along the<br />

path of journalistic development by sharpening their abilities to report and write<br />

in depth. Reporting instruction will include advanced interviewing techniques,<br />

computer-assisted reporting (CAR) and other investigative research methods, the<br />

interpretation of surveys and polling statistics, and instruction in accessing and<br />

analyzing government documents. Writing instruction will include the analysis and<br />

practice of complex storytelling, including the use of narrative techniques, and an<br />

introduction to techniques of analysis and interpretation. This course may also<br />

include an introduction to the reporting of disasters.<br />

Reporting and writing (Tier 3): Specialized <strong>journalism</strong><br />

Building on the reporting and writing techniques of Tiers 1 and 2, students will learn<br />

to research and write on a major subject of news (or “beat”). The emphasis will be<br />

on explanatory reporting <strong>for</strong> the general public, culminating in an extended work of<br />

<strong>journalism</strong> in any medium. The Tier 3 reporter’s judgment of the significance and<br />

meaning of things reflects his or her depth of experience in a domain of human<br />

action. It also reflects an understanding of the methods of interpretation that have<br />

been incubated within a specific discipline or interdisciplinary field. Students,<br />

there<strong>for</strong>e, should be encouraged to coordinate their area of specialized <strong>journalism</strong><br />

(culminating in the Tier 3 course) with their arts and science program.<br />

Reporting and writing (Tier 4)<br />

Broadcast reporting and writing<br />

An introduction to the techniques of gathering, analyzing, and writing news and<br />

features <strong>for</strong> radio and television audiences (including community broadcasting).<br />

Students will learn to use audio and video recorders and editing systems in the<br />

production of news stories, how to interview <strong>for</strong> tape, how to write <strong>for</strong> the ear and to<br />

pictures, and the elements of on-air per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />

Multimedia/online <strong>journalism</strong><br />

Students will learn about the recent evolution of the Internet as a journalistic<br />

tool and medium. They will learn how storytelling can be trans<strong>for</strong>med by technology,<br />

how journalists can use technology to do their job better, and how relationships<br />

with audiences can be trans<strong>for</strong>med into more interactive engagement with citizens<br />

through the Internet and other networked media. They will consider ethical problems<br />

that can arise with new technologies, and how the structure of news organizations<br />

and industry can be trans<strong>for</strong>med by technology. They will learn to write <strong>for</strong> online<br />

and multimedia sites, including how to organize links and use data bases, how to<br />

post stories and update and advance them as developments occur. They will learn to
