Z variate
A random variable which is normally distributed with a mean of zero and
a standard deviation of unity (also referred to as a variable with a standard
normal distribution). It is common practice to convert other normally distributed
variates to the standard normal so that the significance probability
of sample observations from any normally distributed population can be
obtained by reference to a single table of critical values (see under Effect
size).
