example, if a new non-steroidal drug is promoted as being gentle on the
gastrointestinal (GI) tract, physicians may channel patients who they think
are at increased risk of GI adverse effects to receive that drug instead of the
control drug(s) (Petri H, Urquhart J (1991) Channelling bias in the interpretation
of drug effects. Statistics in Medicine. 10: 577-81).
Clinical algorithms
Clinical algorithms are instructions relating to the management of
clinical issues, which are organized on the basis of conditional, branching
logic (Schoenbaum SC (ed.) (1995) Using clinical practice guidelines to
evaluate quality of care. VI. US Department of Health and Human Services,
Bethesda, MD).
Clinical decision analysis (see Decision analysis)
Clinical effectiveness (see under Effectiveness)
Clinical informatics
Clinical informatics is the subset of medical informatics dealing with
clinical practice. The demarcation between the two is not always clear
except that the latter is broader and extends to such areas as medical billing
and health insurance systems. Practitioners, researchers and students of
clinical informatics study such things as (i) the hardware and software
used in medical information processing; (ii) the nature of medical data;
(iii) the language used in clinical medicine to convey data and knowledge;
(iv) medical reasoning; (v) medical computerized expert systems;
(vi) medical databases; (vii) medical decision making; (viii) telemedicine;
(ix) computer-based training.
Clinical pathway
Clinical pathways are interlinked clinical practice guidelines which
organize, sequence and time the care given to a typical uncomplicated
patient (Pearson SD, Goulart-Fisher D, Lee TiH (1995) Critical pathways as
a strategy for improving care: problems and potential. Annals of Internal
Medicine. 123: 941-8). The term is also used synonymously with 'critical
pathways'.
