Labor organizations involved in elections.—There is shown in<br />

Table XXII the number of elections won and lost by the various<br />

types of labor organizations, as well as the number of times each type<br />

of labor organization appeared on the ballot.<br />

The C. I. 0. affiliates won 67.8 percent of the 816 elections in which<br />

they appeared on the ballot. The A. F. of L. unions were successful<br />

in 43.5 percent of the 604 elections in which they were participants.<br />

Unaffiliated national unions and unaffiliated local unions were successful<br />

in securing a majority of the votes in 45.9 percent and 48<br />

percent, respectively, of the elections in which they appeared on the<br />

ballot.<br />

Affiliates of the C. I. 0. were involved most often in the elections<br />

conducted by the Board. They appeared on the ballot in 86.4 percent<br />

of the elections won by some form of labor organization. The<br />

A. F. of L. appeared in 63.9 percent of the elections, unaffiliated<br />

national unions participated in 10.4 percent of the elections, and<br />

unaffiliated local unions in 18.5 percent of the elections.<br />

In 312 elections, in which 79,738 valid votes were cast, unions<br />

affiliated with the A. F. of L. and affiliates of the C. I. 0. both appeared<br />

on the same ballot. These cases represented 27 percent of all<br />

elections held and 23 percent of all valid votes cast in the 1,152<br />

elections conducted by the Board during the fiscal year 1937-38. Of<br />

these 312 elections, C. I. 0. unions won 219 of the elections, whereas<br />

the affiliates of the A. F. of L. were successful in 86 of these elections.<br />

One election resulted in a tie vote, and in six elections neither labor<br />

organization was successful.
