About the region and other interesting offers
The tourism region of Central Croatia encompasses seven counties of the central part of continental
Croatia, while the region City of Zagreb exclusively includes the capital city of Croatia, which is
also the centre and starting point of the broader region. These two tourism regions cover one-third of
the Croatian territory. The region is bounded by idyllic rivers, the Sava, Sutla, Kupa, Odra, Una, Bednja,
Česma, Drava and Mura.
Tourists love starting their trip in Zagreb and taking in the charming architecture, romantic Upper
Town, the many parks, the monumental cemetery Mirogoj, interesting events and festivals, the lively
Dolac market, tasty cuisine and hospitable residents.
The region of Central Croatia includes three nature parks: the largest park is the wetland Lonjsko Polje
and has also been protected as a Ramsar Site; there are also Medvednica and Žumberak-Samoborsko
Gorje. There is a second Ramsar Site, the Crna Mlaka Special Ornithology Reserve in Jastrebarsko.
Samoborsko Gorje is the cradle of Croatian mountaineering (1875). The highest peak of northwestern
Croatia and the Žumberačka Gora is Sveta Gera (1178 m). The Late Renaissance and Baroque
castles and palaces and the medieval fortresses are the most beautiful ornaments of this region. The
most fortresses are certainly found on the Ivanščica and Moslavačka Gora hills. The many picturesque
churches and chapels with their lavish interiors are the highlights of the hilly areas of Central Croatia.
The Opeka Arboretum in Vinica is the most significant and diverse arboretum in Croatia. The Hušnjakovo
site in Krapina is one of the world's best known Palaeolithic sites of Neanderthals, and the Vindija
Cave site in Donja Voća is also an important prehistoric site. The lace-making skills using a bobbin
is characteristic for the lace tradition in Lepoglava, while nearby Ludbreg claims to be the centre of
the world. The Hlebine school of painting in the village of the same name near Koprivnica brought
recognition to the Croatian NaÏve style of painting. Set off and enjoy the hills, over the wetlands to the
fertile plains in this tame but breathtaking beautiful landscape.
