Abraham, AIA, IDSA, president of EnvironmentalResearch Group in Charlottesville, Virginia, has over 20 years ofprofessional experience in the building and construction industry.His primary expertise lies in the fields of daylighting, energyefficiency, and life-cycle assessment (LCA) protocols for buildingsand building products. He is a licensed architect, researcher,and successful industrial designer with numerous patents forinnovative daylighting systems, computer-integrated manufacturingsoftware, and various hardware systems. He is also a leadingproponent and practitioner of sustainable design, havingserved on the President’s Task Force “Greening of the WhiteHouse,” and as chairman of the Passive Solar Industries Council(PSIC). He has served on ASTM Green <strong>Building</strong> and Life CycleCommittees and is a founding member of the U.S. Green<strong>Building</strong> Council.■ Sal Agnello is manager, Indoor Quality Environments forJohnson Controls, Inc. His responsibilities include developingand marketing new products and services for indoor environmentalcontrol, and management of commercial and institutionalbuildings from the perspective of occupant health,comfort, and productivity. His input to the development of IAQpractice in the building operations area has included testimonyat the OSHA Indoor Air Quality hearings, participation at internationalforums on indoor environmental research and practice,and publication of facilities management articles. He holds aB.A. degree from Marquette University, and master’s degreesfrom the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a member ofthe International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate.■ Stephen P. Ashkin is a leading authority on environmentallypreferable chemical products an advocate for the use of renewableresources. He is active in the American Society of TestingMaterials (ASTM), where he serves as chairman of the task groupthat is writing the standard on environmentally preferablecleansers/degreasers. He is involved at the international, federal,state, and local levels, helping to develop environmental andsafety standards relating to chemical cleaning and maintenanceproducts. He serves as Vice President of the Rochester MidlandCorporation, headquartered in Rochester, New York.■ Lucia Athens is an assistant professor of landscape architecturein the School of Environmental Design at the University ofGeorgia, where she specializes in sustainable design theory andtechnology. She holds a master’s degree in architectural studiesfrom the University of Texas at Austin and an undergraduatedegree in landscape architecture from Texas A & M University.Ms. Athens has participated in the development of the City ofAustin Green Builder Program and currently is collaboratingwith the Center for Maximum Potential Systems on the GreenBuilder Advanced Demonstration Home.■ Anthony Bernheim, AIA, is a principal with the architecture,interior design, and planning firm of Simon Martin-VegueWinkelstein Moris (SMWM) in San Francisco. He has been theproject manager for SMWM on numerous large public projects,including, most recently the new San Francisco Main Library.He is an advocate for the design of green and sustainable buildingsand has recently developed indoor air quality strategies anda building commissioning process for the San Francisco MainLibrary. Mr. Bernheim has presented and published papers andconducted seminars and workshops on indoor air quality andbuilding commissioning. He is a member of the AmericanInstitute of Architects and the International Society of IndoorAir Quality and Climate. He is also an adjunct professor at theSchool of Architectural Studies, California College of Arts andCrafts, and has taught classes in building technology (includingindoor air quality) and professional practice.■ Clark C. Bisel, P.E., is a principal at Flack & Kurtz ConsultingEngineers, LLP, in San Francisco. He spearheads the design oflarge scale projects in the San Francisco office, and leads themechanical/electrical design team during the preliminary designphase to ensure that all specific project requirements are met. Heis actively involved in the analysis and implementation ofmechanical and electrical systems, including the application ofstate-of-the-art technology such as thermal storage, daylighting,passive solar and central heat-pump design, and building systemsautomation. Mr. Bisel has completed design projectsexceeding 30 million square feet of space for various buildingtypes including mixed-use, high-rise commercial developments,data centers, museums, and hospitality facilities.■ William Burke, AIA, is an architect and writer who lives in SanFrancisco. He is currently working on the Vital Signs CurriculumMaterials Project, which aims to improve energy and environmentalawareness among architecture students. Mr. Burke is astaff member at the Center for Environmental Design Researchat the University of California, Berkeley. He was the 1995 Chairof the American Institute of Architects San Francisco Chapter’sTask Force on the Environment and was the principal author forPTI’s “Local Government <strong>Sustainable</strong> <strong>Building</strong>s Guidebook.”■ Nicholas T. Dines, FASLA, is a professor and director of theGraduate Program in Landscape Architecture at the Universityof Massachusetts at Amherst. He is a co-editor of Time-SaverStandards for Landscape Architecture, and has written and lecturedfor the American Society of Landscape Architects on thesubject of energy-efficient site planning and design.■ Bruce K. Ferguson is professor of Landscape Architecture at theUniversity of Georgia. His projects include goals for urban waterconservation in the California Water Plan, and conservation ofirrigation water on the White House lawn. He is the author of130 professional articles and the book Stormwater Infiltration.He earned a B.A. degree at Dartmouth College and an M.L.A.degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a past presidentof the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture and aFellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects.■ Daniel J. Goldberger is director of the Green <strong>Building</strong>s Programfor the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives(ICLEI). The program helps local governments overcome technicaland financial barriers to upgrading their facilities’ energyefficiency. He has been involved with the creation and supervisionof the Ontario Municipal Energy Improvement Facility program,as well as with U.S. EPA’s voluntary programs. He hasco-authored Profiting from Energy Efficiency!, and is co-authoringa similar publication for U.S. DOE’s Rebuild America program.Mr. Goldberger has over 12 years of commercial banking, realestate development, energy and environmental experience. Heholds a Masters Degree in International and Public Affairs, witha concentration in International Finance and Banking fromColumbia University in NYC.■ David A. Gottfried is president of Gottfried Technology Inc.The firm provides consultation to management on buildingrelatedenvironmental and resource-efficiency issues. It also performsenvironmental building seminars and education and isinvolved in the development and promotion of emerging industrytechnologies. Mr. Gottfried is a co-founder and vice-chairmanof the U.S. Green <strong>Building</strong> Council, and founder and pastchairman of ASTM’s Green <strong>Building</strong> Subcommittee.
