The award stipendhas enabled him to return to Germany and establisha research group at the MDC in May, 2009, after fouryears as postdoctoral fellow at the University ofCalifornia, San Francisco, USA.The MDC is financing two junior groups, those ofBjörn Christian Schroeder (previously of theUniversity of California, San Francisco) and JamesPoulet (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne,Switzer land), within the excellence cluster“NeuroCure: Towards a better outcome of neurologicaldisorders.” The groups started at the MDC in 2009.Schroeder is working on the Berlin-Buch campus andPoulet is at the Charité campus in Berlin-Mitte until anew building is constructed for NeuroCure in the citycenter.Markus Landthaler, of Rockefeller University in NewYork, is the first junior group leader to be recruitedwithin the framework of the BIMSB.The MDC continues to recruit scientists for ourongoing projects and new activities. Major ongoingrecruitments include filling professorships in theareas of Epidemiology, Metabolism, Cardiovascularresearch, and Systems Biology.The recruitment of excellent PhD students is also apriority for the institute and is based on internationalcalls and a rigorous selection procedure. The programsoffered to PhD students continue to expandand now include lectures, courses, seminars, researchvisits to other laboratories, etc. The MDC is now hometo several graduate schools that have been establishedthrough grants with the HelmholtzAssociation and have received a total of 7.2 Mio. ¤ fundingto run over the next six years. These include thegraduate school “Molecular Cell Biology,” which comprisesthe International PhD programme in MolecularCell Biology, the International Helmholtz ResearchSchools in Molecular Neurobiology (MolNeuro) andTranslational Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine(TransCard), and the MDC-NYU Exchange Program inSystems Biology. Each of these projects springs fromthe initiative of one or more of our research labs andaims to enhance our current offerings for PhD students.At the same time, we intend to better integratethese programs through a core PhD course held in thewinden, bevor das Vorhaben Realität werden kann. Wirhoffen sehr, dass es als prioritäre Maßnahme aufgenommenwird, die im Frühjahr 2010 vom Helmholtz-Senat festgelegt werden.Nach unserer Auffassung ist die Errichtung des IPLessentiell für die Zukunft des MDC. Eine eingehendephänotypische Charakterisierung existierender undneu zu entwickelnder Tiermodelle ist ein grundlegenderund unverzichtbarer Schritt für das bessere Verständnismenschlicher Krankheiten.Einwerbung von exzellenten jungen Wissen -schaftlern und die öffentliche Wahrnehmungdes MDC sind zwei Seiten einer MedailleUnter der Leitung von Walter Birchmeier hat das MDCneue hochtalentierte junge Wissenschaftler und exzellenteerfahrene Professoren gewinnen können. In denJahren 2008 und 2009 haben sieben neue Nachwuchsgruppenihre Arbeit am MDC aufgenommen.Jana Wolf, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, hat ihreForschungsgruppe im Rahmen der Helmholtz-Allianz„Systembiologie“ und durch zusätzliche Mittel überdas FORSYS-Programm des BMBF im Frühjahr 2008am MDC etabliert.Francesca M. Spagnoli, Rockefeller University, New Yorkund Matthew Poy, ETH-Zürich, haben ebenfalls in2008 ihre Arbeit am MDC aufgenommen. Im September2009 erhielt Francesca Spagnoli vom EuropäischenForschungsrat (engl. Abkürzung ERC) einen von 240vergebenen ERC starting grants von über 2500 Bewerbern.Jan Erik Siemens, University of California, San Francisco,der im Sommer 2008 den Sofia-Kovalevskaja-Preisder Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung erhielt, hat seineArbeit im Mai 2009 am MDC aufgenommen.Im Exzellenzcluster „NeuroCure: Towards a better outcomeof neurological disorders“ finanziert das MDCzwei Nachwuchsgruppen. Björn Christian Schroeder,University of California, San Francisco, und James Poulet,Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Schweiz,haben in 2009 ihre Arbeit am MDC gegonnen.
