It fosters translationalresearch with targeted education of graduate students,scholarships, travel grants, and IT-infrastructure.PhD students in the Cardiovascular andMetabolic Disease Program are affiliated with bothbasic science and clinical research groups and activelydevelop the program by organizing seminars, retreats,and conferences. The Program offers lectures, summerschools, and e-learning and encourages interactionsnot only between students and faculty in Berlin, butalso with our international partner universities.In 2009 the Berlin Institute Medical Systems Biologyand the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology ofthe New York University started their joint PhD-Exchange- Programme. All the participating students splittheir time between Berlin and New York.Currently, approximately one quarter of all MDC PhDstudents are selected through a vigorous internationalrecruitment process. Around 180 PhD students areworking towards their PhD degree at the MDC and 70PhD students visit the MDC per year to work on collaborativeprojects. An annual scientific symposium (PhDRetreat) is organized by the PhD students of the MDCand FMP to promote further networking between thestudents.During the 2009 PhD student selection process, 779applications from 69 countries were reviewed. Ofthose applicants, 23 PhD students were accepted intothe different Programs. The MDC also has a FellowshipCommittee that awards scholarships to outstandingcandidates who develop and present a research project.The degree of Dr. rer. nat. (German equivalent of a PhDdegree) is either awarded by the partner universitiesor may be obtained through the student home university.Eligible are graduate students of the life sciencesholding a degree comparable to the German Diplomaor a MSc with a research thesis is typically required forapplicants.Am MDC arbeiten ständig rund 180 Doktorandinnenund Doktoranden. Zusätzlich vergibt der Stipendienausschussam MDC in jedem Jahr Stipendien, fürdie sich Doktoranden und Post-Doktoranden mitherausragenden Forschungsprojekten bewerben können.Zur Bewerbung berechtigt sind Absolventen derLebenswissenschaften mit einem deutschen Diplomoder ein Masterabschluss (Master of Science - MSc) einschließlicheiner MSc-Forschungsarbeit. Den Doktorandenwird der Titel Dr. rer. nat.
