Theresearch concepts of the MDC and the FMP complementeach other: while the molecular medicalresearch at the MDC is particularly dedicated to diseasesor clinical symptoms and their molecular explanations,the FMP investigates the functional andstructural characterization of proteins. As a result, newapproaches are developed toward the modulation ofprotein function, especially of small molecules. Hence,a main emphasis of research is the development ofnew drugs and pharmaceuticals. The FMP is known forits scientific work that combines the fields of chemistryand biology.The close connection between the two research establishmentsextends into the organizational level. Guestscientist contracts make it possible for scientists ofone institute to use the equipment in the other. Bothestablishments send representatives to importantcommittees of the other establishment respectively.The planning of costly and long-term research projectsas well as the appointment of leading scientiststakes place in joint agreement. Beide Einrichtungen entsenden Vertreter indie wichtigsten Gremien der jeweils anderen Einrichtung.Kostspielige, langfristige Forschungsprojekte werdengemeinsam geplant, führende Wissenschaftlern ingegenseitigem Einvernehmen ernannt.
