Chapter 8:Midshipmen and Cadetsare Young People andFuture LeadersRecommend<strong>at</strong>ions 16-18Key findings <strong>of</strong> <strong>Review</strong>Given <strong>the</strong>ir age, most undergradu<strong>at</strong>es enter ADFA without much ‘real world’ experience, with manyhaving never lived away from home before. 1 The differing levels <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>urity <strong>of</strong> undergradu<strong>at</strong>es, combinedwith <strong>the</strong> pressures <strong>of</strong> living, working and studying toge<strong>the</strong>r, can present substantial risk factors forADFA.In particular, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Review</strong> findings indic<strong>at</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong>:• A number <strong>of</strong> benefits may flow from <strong>the</strong> introduction <strong>of</strong> a single Service and work placementprogram for all Services. The primary benefit would be th<strong>at</strong> undergradu<strong>at</strong>es arrive <strong>at</strong> ADFAslightly older and with a gre<strong>at</strong>er level <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>urity. In turn, this may decrease <strong>the</strong> likelihood <strong>of</strong>unacceptable behaviour. 2• There is a ‘lack <strong>of</strong> comprehensive and effective mentoring opportunities for cadets’, 3particularly with respect to female undergradu<strong>at</strong>es.• There have been instances <strong>of</strong> excessive consumption <strong>of</strong> alcohol among undergradu<strong>at</strong>eswhich is an established risk factor for a range <strong>of</strong> inappropri<strong>at</strong>e behaviours. 4In response, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Review</strong> made a number <strong>of</strong> recommend<strong>at</strong>ions designed to mitig<strong>at</strong>e some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se riskfactors.66
