Richard D’AmatoDick D’Amato was reappointed to the U.S.-China Economic andSecurity Review Commission by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reidon December 8, 2010, for a two-year term expiring December 31,2012. He previously served on the Commission from March 2001 toDecember 2007, serving as the chairman and vice chairman of theCommission from April 2001 through December 20, 2005. He is anattorney and a member of the Maryland and DC Bars. He is aformer delegate to the General Assembly of the State of Maryland(1998–2002), representing the Annapolis, Maryland, region, andserved on the Appropriations Committee. He is also a retired captainin the United States Navy Reserve, served two tours of dutyin the Vietnam theatre aboard the USS KING (DLG–10), and threeyears as an assistant professor of Government at the U.S. NavalAcademy. He served on the Trade Deficit Review Commission, aCongressional advisory body, as a member from 1999 to 2000.He served as vice president for development of Synergics, Inc., aninternational energy company and developer of alternative energyprojects, particularly wind energy. He also serves as an official presenterand participant in former Vice President Gore’s climateproject, serves as a member of Maryland Governor O’Malley’s commissionon climate change, and is a trustee of St. Mary’s Collegeof Maryland.From 1988 to 1998, Commissioner D’Amato was the Democraticcounsel for the Committee on Appropriations of the U.S. Senate.He was responsible for coordinating and managing the annual appropriationsbills and other legislation on policy and funding ofU.S. defense, foreign policy, trade, and intelligence matters. Heserved from 1980 to 1988 as senior foreign policy and defense advisorto the former Democratic Senate leader, Senator Robert C.Byrd. In this position, he supervised work on major foreign policy,national security, and trade policies and was the co-director for theSenate Arms Control Observer Group, a bipartisan leadership organization,which served as liaison with The White House on all armscontrol negotiations with the Soviet Union. He also served on theSenate delegation to the Kyoto negotiations on global warming.Mr. D’Amato began his career as legislative director for CongressmanJames Jeffords (Ind.–VT) from 1975 to 1978 and then aschief of staff for Senator Abraham Ribicoff (D–CT) until 1980.He has been active in other aspects of public service, havingfounded the annual Taste-of-the-Nation dinner in Annapolis aspart of the nationwide ‘‘Share Our Strength’’ hunger relief organizationand created an annual scholarship for college-bound African-American women in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He currentlyserves on the boards of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, theAnnapolis Maritime Museum, The Johns Hopkins Cuba ExchangeProgram, and the University of Oxford Congressional Visitors program.He is a founding member of the National Sailing Hall ofFame.Commissioner D’Amato received his B.A. (cum laude) from CornellUniversity in 1964 and served on the Cornell board of trustees’Advisory Council.
