Elena Ciobanu Oda Bucuriei Ode to joy I wrote verses from Friedrich Schiller's poem on the walls of the buildings in the new residential complex that is being built in the Băneasa neighborhood, located in the Northern Bucharest. This is an exclusivist collectivity, a sign of social separatism, a powerful characteristic of the urban space of Bucharest after the Revolution in 1989. The poem was written by Schiller as a celebration of friendship between people and it is best known for its musical setting by Ludwig van Beethoven. The final movement of the Symphony also became the official anthem of the European Union, in order to celebrate the shared values of the Member States and their unity in diversity. When developers market the new residential areas flowering on the outskirts, they often emphasize features like safety, property values, community spirit, services and living standards similar to the western style of living. Among the most important building sites in the area, Băneasa Residencies was announced as being one of the biggest residential projects in South-East Europe; a multifunctional complex containing a commercial area, a business park and a residential area with sport facilities, medical services, schools and churches. "The place where each of us would like to live, work, and spend their spare time, Băneasa Residences is planned as a city within a city, functioning within a set of community rules and security measures that will assure its inhabitants a safe and healthy climate" (as the neighborhood's presentation claims). Mainly built for the upper-class, the apartments in the area are very highly priced, even if they are merely homogeneous housing solutions, luring their future residents with promises of an exclusivist neighborhood. While a sense of social decline can drive people into these communities, their quality is questionable; even though residents have moved to select areas believing that they would find their nostalgic idea of community, they have not achieved this. These communities promote in fact an alienation of the individual. It is merely a short term answer that simply avoids the problems of economic disparity, social tension and exclusion. It is said that at the time it was written, Schiller's friends set the poem to music and it quickly became very popular as a drinking song. In later life, the poet was contemptuous of this popularity and dismissed the poem as typical of "the bad taste of the age" in which it had been written. Poemul a fost scris de catre Schiller pentru a celebra fraternitatea dintre oameni și este cunoscut datorită transpunerii muzicale într-o simfonie, ce îi aparține lui Ludwig van Beethoven. Finalul coral al Simfoniei a devenit de asemenea și imnul oficial al Uniunii Europene, celebrând valorile comune ale statelor membre și unitatea lor în diversitate. Când dezvoltatorii prezintă noile cartiere rezidențiale apărute la marginea orașului, evidențiază caracteristici cum sunt valoarea proprietăților, siguranța, spiritul comunitar, calitatea serviciilor și standardele de viață similare celor vestice. Printre cele mai importante lucrări din zona, Băneasa Residences a fost anunțat ca fiind unul dintre cele mai mari proiecte rezidențiale din Sud-Estul Europei; un complex multifuncțional ce include o zona comercială, un business park și o zonă rezidențială cu facilități sportive, servicii medicale, școli și biserici. “ Locul în care fiecare dintre noi și-ar dori să trăiască, muncească, și să-și petreacă timpul liber, Băneasa Residences este gândit ca un oraș în oraș, funcționând pe baza unor reguli comunitare și a unor măsuri de siguranță ce vor asigura locuitorilor un climat sigur și sănătos” (după cum sună prezentarea cartierului). Construite în principal pentru clasele sociale superioare, apartamentele din zonă au prețuri extrem de ridicate, chiar dacă nu sunt decât soluții omogene de locuire ce își atrag viitorii proprietari cu promisiunea unui cartier exclusivist. Deși percepția declinului social poate atrage oamenii în aceste comunități, calitatea lor este discutabilă; noii rezidenți s-au mutat în zone selecte în încercarea de a găsi ideea de comunitate pe care și-o imaginează nostalgic, însă acest lucru nu se întâmplă în realitate. Aceste comunități promovează și accentuează de fapt izolarea indivizilor. Sunt doar un răspuns pe termen scurt ce evită să discute problema disparității economice, a tensiunii și excluziunii sociale. Se spune ca prietenii lui Schiller au transpus poemul pe muzică după ce acesta l- a scris, devenind astfel în foarte scurt timp un cântec de petrecere extrem de popular. Mai târziu, poetul s-a arătat disprețuitor față de popularitatea pe care o câștigase și a renegat poemul ca fiind tipic pentru ‘prostul gust al epocii’ în care a fost scris.
