The maximum elongation per day per plant can be as high as 25 cm/day<br />

(Alim et a1, I962". Chowdhury <strong>and</strong> Zaman. 1970). The maximum elongation<br />

reported per day per internode is 4 em (Sugawara <strong>and</strong> Ilo<strong>ri</strong>kaiw-‘a. 1971) The<br />

normal rate <strong>of</strong> elongation per plant is 2 to 1O cm/day (Yamaguchi <strong>and</strong> Sato.<br />

1961; Chowdhury <strong>and</strong> Zaman. 19110). The longest recorded internode is 4? to<br />

60 cm long (Alirn et a1. 1962; Singh. 1962). There is a close relationship between<br />

the size <strong>of</strong> the leaf sheath <strong>and</strong> the length o1‘ the intemode (Yamaguchi<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sato. 1961).<br />

Deep water <strong>ri</strong>ces do not grow entirely erect but rather zigzag under the water<br />

<strong>and</strong> have a tendency to crawl on the surface (Ramiah <strong>and</strong> Rainaswami. 1941).<br />

These <strong>ri</strong>ees differ in the number <strong>of</strong> internodes they develop (Chowdhury <strong>and</strong><br />

Zaman. I970).<br />

When subjected to deep water stress, the size <strong>of</strong> the air cavities in the eulm<br />

increases (Basu ct al.. 1970; Roy. 1972), while the diameter <strong>of</strong> the cells <strong>of</strong> the<br />

cortex <strong>and</strong> the thickness <strong>of</strong> the phloem remain constant (Basil et al.. 1970).<br />

Since plants are usually subjected to deep water after 4 to 8 weeks <strong>of</strong> growth,<br />

rapid tillc<strong>ri</strong>ng has already occurred before flooding. However. further tillc<strong>ri</strong>ng<br />

or branching usually occurs du<strong>ri</strong>ng flooding.
