seeding. the st<strong>and</strong> establishment was poor Therefore. the crop in the first date<br />

<strong>of</strong> seeding produced relatively low yields. 1R5. however. produced better yields<br />

than the three other va<strong>ri</strong>eties <strong>and</strong> lines even under dry spells like the one which<br />

occurred du<strong>ri</strong>ng the first seeding.<br />

M148 was severely infected with sheath blight <strong>and</strong> IR442—2—58 with blast.<br />

resulting in poor nitrogen response. Solar radiation ialues were not different<br />

du<strong>ri</strong>ng the pe<strong>ri</strong>od <strong>of</strong> the three seeding dates because <strong>of</strong> fairly uniform rainfall<br />

dist<strong>ri</strong>bution (Fig l4)<br />
