in June <strong>and</strong> July after multiplication in the subtropical zone. The inflow <strong>of</strong> warm<br />

air masses is clearly shown by the elevation <strong>of</strong> the temperature over about 20°C<br />

<strong>and</strong> the plentiful rainfall which enables <strong>ri</strong>ce to be grown. The northward migration<br />

<strong>of</strong> the planthoppers depends passively on the movement <strong>of</strong> the air mass.<br />

<strong>and</strong> the planlhoppers are thus considered to have adapted very well to their<br />

environment. As shown in Fig. 7. two cycles <strong>of</strong> population growth <strong>of</strong> It’. lzrgens<br />

occur in Taiwan. depending upon the two cropping system <strong>of</strong> <strong>ri</strong>ce beginning in<br />

February or March. 1n Japan immigration occurs in late June <strong>and</strong> July. consequently<br />

there is only one cycle <strong>of</strong> population growth <strong>of</strong> By“. Iugens. In Northem<br />

Japan no immigrants <strong>of</strong> N. iugens have been found in substantial numbers.<br />
