The <strong>G20</strong> has a critical part to play in helping achieve the 2030<br />
Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals. It needs to support<br />
the initiatives at the highest political levels, writes Helen Clark<br />
Last year in Antalya, the <strong>G20</strong><br />
leaders agreed to develop an<br />
action plan to ensure that <strong>G20</strong><br />
work aligns with the 2030 Agenda<br />
for Sustainable Development.<br />
<strong>G20</strong> leaders are expected to adopt this<br />
action plan at their Hangzhou Summit<br />
in September. By doing so, the leaders<br />
will demonstrate their commitment to<br />
sustainable development.<br />
When the <strong>G20</strong> began meeting<br />
at the leaders’ level, it focused<br />
on short-term actions to<br />
stabilise the global economy.<br />
Thereafter, its focus shifted to<br />
how to advance sustainable<br />
and balanced economic<br />
growth. Now, by framing policy<br />
action within a longer-term<br />
sustainable development perspective,<br />
the <strong>G20</strong> can strengthen its ability to address<br />
the underlying drivers of short-term risks.<br />
This will open up more space in which<br />
the <strong>G20</strong> can consider sources of instability<br />
to the global economy and development<br />
that go beyond the traditional, financecentred<br />
concerns.<br />
With the action plan in place, the <strong>G20</strong><br />
can add value to the implementation of<br />

budget for<br />
2016<br />
the 2030 Agenda through policy actions<br />
that build on its economic cooperation<br />
work. Its convening power and ability<br />
to adopt and support initiatives at the<br />
highest political level will contribute to<br />
deepening international cooperation for<br />
sustainable development. This will benefit<br />
all developing countries and the provision<br />
of global public goods.<br />

hopes that the <strong>G20</strong> will<br />
identify specific contributions<br />
its members can make to<br />
implement the 2030 Agenda’s<br />
Sustainable Development Goals<br />
(SDGs) across all relevant <strong>G20</strong><br />
work streams. Such a declaration will<br />
help increase the momentum for the 2030<br />
Agenda and help tackle global challenges<br />
that extend beyond the ability of any<br />
individual country to address on its own.<br />
Six members of the <strong>G20</strong> presented their<br />
national voluntary reviews on the 2030<br />
Agenda at the recent session of the UN<br />
High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable<br />
