The <strong>G20</strong> has begun a new chapter of global agricultural<br />

innovation and sustainable development, writes<br />

The <strong>G20</strong> agriculture ministers’ meeting<br />

was successfully held in Xi’an, China, on<br />

3 June 2016. President Xi Jinping sent his<br />

congratulations on the convening of the<br />

meeting, and welcomed all the delegates to<br />

discuss global agricultural growth and cooperation.<br />

The meeting received positive responses and attracted<br />

the participation of the agriculture ministers of all <strong>G20</strong><br />

members and guest countries, as well as the leaders of<br />

international organisations, including the Food and<br />

Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Food Programme<br />

and the International Fund for Agricultural<br />

Development. Under the theme of “Agricultural<br />

Innovation and Sustainable Development”,<br />

participants had in-depth discussions and reached<br />

consensus on such issues as food security, sustainable<br />

agricultural development, technological innovation,<br />

investment and trade. The meeting was fruitful and<br />

uplifting, with many outcomes, among which was the<br />

<strong>G20</strong> Agriculture Ministers Meeting Communiqué 2016.<br />

A leading role<br />

On a food security system, the meeting agreed that it is<br />

necessary to build a multi-tiered, multi-faceted system<br />

to improve food security. The <strong>G20</strong> should continue<br />

to play a leading role, and North-South cooperation,<br />
