Demographic Changes<br />

Demographic changes are another factor outside the health care<br />

system that could affect health care spending trends. As illustrated in Figure<br />

4-37, the United States population is currently aging. Because age is an<br />

important determinant of health care spending, differences in how the age<br />

distribution is changing at different points in time can cause differences in<br />

health care spending growth over time.<br />

Figure 4-38 reports estimates of how health care spending would<br />

have changed in recent years based solely on changes in the age and sex<br />
