can be a single hop from the target so fading is less of a problem. Our
services to Asia provide better signals via transmitters in the region
than was possible direct from the Netherlands.
It makes sense to have a smaller number of transmitting stations that are
full occupied (or nearly so) instead of scattering transmissions across a
larger number of facilities that are only operating at half capacity.
There are a lot of fixed costs associated with transmitting stations, so
the more productive they can be, the better. At our Madagascar relay
station, for example, we have about ten clients who collectively use about
two thirds of the total transmitter hours. That includes IBB. Without
those other broadcasters, it would be extremely hard to justify the cost
of running the facility.

Would the government consider selling the VOA Greenville facility to some
private party? My guess would be the price tag would be enormous since it
is such a large facility. I have visited and toured the VOA Greenville
facilities when I lived in North Carolina back in 1990, and back then (in
"better" days) the facilities were huge.

HAITI Nach der Voice of America reagierten auch der BBC World Service
und Radio France Internationale mit Sondersendungen auf die Situation in
Haiti. Mit Aerger war dabei zu bemerken, dass die Ankuendigungs- und PR-
Maschinerie im Inland auf Hochtouren lief, waehrend die Sendeplaene nicht
schnellst- und breitestmoeglich kommuniziert wurden. Offensichtlich ist
aber auch, dass die Kurzwelle nicht mehr die erste Option ist.
Nach einer Marktanalyse, die der fuer die strategische Leitung der US-
Auslandsdienste zustaendige Broadcasting Board of Governors im Juni 2009
auf Haiti durchfuehren liess, nutzt weniger als 1 Prozent der Bevoelkerung
die Kurzwelle und nur 8 Prozent die Mittelwelle. Tatsaechlich ist es wohl
so, dass nur 1 Prozent der Radiogeraete ueberhaupt noch die Kurzwelle
empfangen koennen, aber 63 Prozent die Mittelwelle und 96 Prozent UKW. Zu
diesen kommen dann noch die UKW-Funktionen vieler Mobiltelephone. Wo aber
die Empfaengerseite nicht mehr ueber die Kurzwelle verfuegt, macht
Kurzwelle auch keinen Sinn mehr als Medium in Krisen.
Vor dem Erdbeben gab es in der Hauptstadt rund 50 Stationen. Nur Signal FM
90.5 konnte beim Erdbeben weitersenden, Caraibes FM und der lokale UKW-
Sender von Radio France Internationale konnten sofort nach dem Erdbeben
wieder senden. CaraibesFM und SignalFM waren auch die beiden einzigen
Sender aus Port-au-Prince, die in den naechsten Tagen auch im Internet zu
hoeren waren.
Mit Hilfe auslaendischer Techniker waren eine Woche spaeter 20 Stationen
wieder auf Sendung, darunter Vision 2000, Radio Lumiere, Radio Solidarite,
Melodie FM, Radio One und Radio Boukman (aus Cite-Soleil im groessten Slum
