Virtualization Hosts
Because of the recent trend of virtualization in the data center, a hybrid of the two interface
types exists as well. Although historically, 802.1Q trunks were reserved for interconnecting
network devices only, virtualization hosts often require 802.1Q trunk connectivity directly
to hosts. Even though these hosts tag traffic with 802.1Q headers, they are typically not true
bridges and therefore can be treated as hosts and bypass the listening and learning stages of
spanning tree initialization. This configuration is sometimes referred to as TrunkFast.
Example 2-57 shows how to enable TrunkFast on a specific interface.
