Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP) is a Cisco innovation that, although similar to<br />

HSRP <strong>and</strong> VRRP, provides basic load-balancing capabilities. GLBP enables two or more<br />

routers to provide first-hop redundancy services for IP traffic. In GLBP, a virtual IP address<br />

is configured <strong>and</strong> is “owned” by one of the routers participating in the GLBP group to<br />

represent the default gateway for a given subnet. The owning router or active virtual<br />

gateway (AVG) in a GLBP environment responds to the sender with a unique MAC address<br />

to enable the distribution of traffic.<br />

GLBP uses different load-balancing mechanisms to determine the distribution of traffic<br />

between the routers participating in the GLBP group.<br />

At the time of this writing, GLBP is supported on the Nexus 7000 series switches.<br />

GLBP Configuration<br />

The first step to configure GLBP is to enable it in global configuration mode using the<br />

feature comm<strong>and</strong>, as demonstrated in Example 3-119. With the modular nature of NX-OS,<br />

using the feature comm<strong>and</strong> loads the GLBP modular code into memory for execution.<br />

Without the feature enabled, it would not be resident in memory.
