Port-Channels<br />

Where multiple links exist between two switches, it is often preferable to treat them as a<br />

single link from a spanning tree perspective. The benefit of this logical bundling is that<br />

redundant physical connectivity is not blocked by spanning tree, making more b<strong>and</strong>width<br />

available for data traffic. Port-channels also create a level of redundancy because the<br />

failure of a physical link can no longer cause spanning tree to reconverge. The Nexus 7000<br />

enables up to eight links to be aggregated in a port-channel. For optimal performance, it is<br />

recommended that the number of links be a power of 2 (for example, 2, 4, or 8 links).<br />

Members of a port-channel can be on the same linecard or protect against linecard failure<br />

<strong>and</strong> can be distributed acr<strong>os</strong>s multiple modules in the system. Port-channels use various<br />

algorithms to hash frames as they arrive <strong>and</strong> load-balance traffic acr<strong>os</strong>s the physical
