OSPF Summarization
The capability of OSPF to summarize routes is restricted to area boundary routers (ABRs)
or autonomous system boundary routers (ASBRs). When a network is summarized, a single
entry with a shorter prefix (commonly called a supernet) is created and added to the routing
table as a representation of the longer prefix subnets. In Example 3-39, a summary for
192.168.128.0 /20 is created and advertised out interface e1/18 for the network topology
illustrated in Figure 3-6.
Figure 3-6. OSPF Summarization
Note
With this summary, the following networks are represented: 192.168.128.0/24
through 192.168.143.0/24.
Example 3-42 demonstrates how to configure OSPF summarization with a numeric process
ID.
