With the ASM multicast group, each OTV Edge Device will be a multicast receiver and a multicast source. All interfaces in the path must be configured with PIM sparse-mode (ip pim sparse-mode), and each device must specify the SSM group to be used with the command ip pim ssm range. The sparsemode and SSM groups should be groups that are currently unused. It is recommended to use a group in the private range 239.0.0.0/8 for the sparse mode group and 232.0.0.0/8 for the SSM group. A Rendezvous Point (RP) must be defined for the sparse mode group, and it is recommended to deploy at least two RPs for redundancy. Redundancy can be accomplished by using Anycast RP, where PIM anycast (ip pim anycast-rp anycast-rp-address anycastrp-peer-address) is used to ensure that both RPs are aware of all registered sources. The RP addresses can either be coded statically on each device or can be distributed dynamically using Auto-RP or BSR. The RPs can be placed in a single site in a two-site deployment or can be placed in two separate sites so that a loss of connectivity to one site does not impact other sites. Because each OTV Edge Device is a multicast source, each OTV Edge Device performs the following steps to become adjacent with the other OTV Edge Devices with multicast transport: 1. Each OTV Edge Device sends an IGMP report to join the specific ASM group used to carry control protocol exchanges. The Edge Devices join the group as hosts, leveraging the join interface. PIM is not enabled on the join interface in the OTV VDC; it is enabled and configured on the upstream Layer 3 interface. The ASM multicast group is specified only in the overlay-interface configuration. 2. The OTV control protocol running generates hello packets that need to be sent to all other OTV Edge Devices; this enables each Edge Device to communicate about its existence to establish a full-mesh of control plane adjacencies per overlay interface. 3. The OTV hello messages are sent across the logical overlay to reach all OTV remote devices; the original frames will be OTV-encapsulated, adding an external IP header (42 bytes). The source IP address of the OTV-encapsulated header is the IP address of the join interface of the Edge Device; the destination is the multicast address of the ASM group dedicated to carry the control protocol. This will result in the multicast frame to be sent to the join interface toward the Layer 3 network core. 4. The multicast frames are carried across the transport and optimally replicated to reach all the OTV Edge Devices that joined that multicast group specified on the overlay interface configuration. 5. The receiving OTV Edge Devices decapsulates the packets.
