LDP and Layer 3 VPNs
Figure 12-2. MPLS Deployment: Device Relationships
Probably the most widely deployed application of MPLS is the capability to share a
common network infrastructure across multiple customers by defining VPNs for customer
resources. RFC 4364 defines the use of MPLS and BGP to achieve such functionality.
MPLS VPNs are widely deployed by service provider networks and offered as an
alternative to traditional wide area network (WAN) interconnect technologies such as
Frame Relay or ATM. Enterprise adoption of MPLS VPNs has also been on the rise in
recent years as a result of organizations grappling with the scale, security, and emergence of
shared services data centers where lines of business IT operations need to be consolidated
while still maintaining existing levels of separation.
The following is a listing of steps to configure basic elements of MPLS on a Nexus 7000,
with examples of each step in Example 12-12:
1. Install the MPLS Feature set in the default Virtual Device Context (VDC).
2. [Optional] After the Feature set is installed, limit MPLS to specific target VDCs via
per-VDC configuration. This is accomplished via the no-allow feature-set command
under the VDC configuration, which restricts the feature set from being enabled inside
of the VDC.
3. Enable the MPLS feature set inside of the target VDC.
4. Enable the MPLS feature inside of the target VDC. Make sure to enable the LDP,
L3VPN, and TE features during this step as well.
