Quality of Service (QoS) This chapter covers the following topics: • Nexus 7000 quality of service configuration • Nexus 5000 quality of service configuration • Nexus 1000V quality of service configuration In the past, QoS in a data center environment has been frequently overlooked. Data centers were built with large bandwidth links, and most applications were isolated to the data center and centralized. Virtualization is changing all those rules because applications are more mobile within and between data centers. Technology enables applications that may have been distributed in the past to be centralized, and the need to differentiate between applications to meet service-level agreements (SLA) is becoming critical. The Nexus family of switches provides a rich set of tools to the network administrator to classify, queue, and police traffic in a data center. This chapter describes common QoS mechanisms used and illustrates their configurations. The differences in platform and hardware capabilities are also discussed where relevant. A solid foundation of QoS terminology and theory is helpful because QoS fundamentals will not be described in this chapter. As a family of products, the Nexus line shares some common attributes, not the least of which is NX-OS. With NX-OS providing an opportunity to set new defaults, the engineers enabled QoS by default. In addition, Nexus switches “trust” QoS markings by default. These two settings simplify life for network administrators who had to enable QoS and configure trust in the past. The QoS structure in the Nexus family is based on the Modular QoS CLI (MQC) The MQC is consistent with other Cisco platforms and provides a familiar and consistent interface for configuration of QoS policies. Using the MQC involves a three-step process to first classify traffic using various attributes such as access lists, Class of Service (CoS), or Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP). After the traffic is classified, a policy map is used to determine what is done with the matched traffic, and finally the policy map is applied to an interface or VLAN to take effect. Example 10-1 illustrates a simple application of the MQC where the goal is to match Telnet traffic from a specific network and set the CoS to 5. Example 10-1.
