• CPU speed 1500 MHZ
• Configured 2 GB RAM for the VSM VM
• 3 NICs
• SCSI Hard Disk, 3 GB with LSI Logic Parallel adapter
• Reserve 2 GB RAM for the VSM VM
• Configure VM network adapters and attach ISO to VM and power on.
The Nexus 1000V virtual appliance has two different modes of installation with the 4.0(4)
SV1(2) software release. The next section covers the manual installation of the VSM virtual
appliance. The section, “Nexus 1000V GUI Installation” covers the GUI installation. Refer
back to the topology in Figure 9-1 for the configuration that follows.
Nexus 1000V Deployed on Nexus 1010 Virtual Services Blade
The Nexus 1010 offers a dedicated hardware solution to deploy virtual network services.
The following services can be deployed on the Nexus 1010 and Nexus 1010-X:
• Nexus 1000V Virtual Supervisor Module (VSM)
• Nexus 1000V Virtual Security Gateway
• Nexus 1000V Network Analysis Module
• Data Center Network Manager
The Nexus 1010(s) can be deployed in a HA pair. The HA pair offers stateful failover
between active and standby Cisco Nexus 1010 appliances. The HA pairs need to be the
same hardware platforms, meaning a pair to consist of Nexus 1010 and Nexus 1010 or a
pair consisting of Nexus-1010-X and Nexus-1010-X; they cannot be mixed.
Providing a dedicated appliance for the virtualized services enables network administrators
to easily install and configure virtual access switches similar to the way they install and
configure physical switches. Dedicating a hardware appliance simplifies deployment,
upgrades, and configuration because there is not a dependency on finding server resources
for these resources.
The Nexus 1010 has different deployment options. These options vary depending on
topology; the options are documented in the Cisco Nexus 1010 Virtual Services Appliance
Deployment Guide, which you can find at Cisco.com or from this URL:
http://tinyurl.com/ccwoyq2.
The Nexus-1010 and Nexus 1010-X have different scale and feature sets; refer to the Cisco
Nexus 1010 and 1010-X Virtual Services Appliances Data Sheet for specifics
(http://tinyurl.com/462udl8).
The Nexus 1000v Installation Management Center installs only the VSM on an ESX; it does
not install the VSM on a Nexus 1010. For VSM on Nexus 1000V Virtual Supervisor Module
on the Nexus 1010 dedicated appliance, perform the following steps:
1. SSH to the Nexus 1010 Appliance Management IP Address:
