Umar !&%!&j saying, "I know which is <strong>the</strong> harshest verse in Allaah's Book."<br />

(Because referring to a verse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan as being harsh is disrespectful)<br />

Hadhrat Umar W= got down and struck <strong>the</strong> man with his lash saying, "Have<br />

you studied <strong>the</strong> verse so deeply that you know all about it?" <strong>The</strong> man <strong>the</strong>n went<br />

away. <strong>The</strong> following morning Hadhrat Umar said to <strong>the</strong> man, "Which<br />

verse were you referring to yesterday?" <strong>The</strong> man said that it was <strong>the</strong> verse:<br />

Whoever commits an evil act will meet (receive) its punishment ...<br />

(Surah Nisaa, verse 123)<br />

He <strong>the</strong>n said, "(This means that) Since every one <strong>of</strong> us commits sins, we<br />

punished for it." Hadhrat Umar !&WMj said; "When this verse was reveal<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r did we enjoy food nor drink until Allaah relieved us by revealing <strong>the</strong><br />

verse:<br />

Whoever commits a (minor) sin or wrongs himself (by committing a<br />

major sin) and <strong>the</strong>n seeks Allaah's forgiveness, he will surely find that<br />

Allaah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. {Surah Nisaa, verse 1<br />

<strong>The</strong> Conviction <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Amr bin Samurah<br />

%gwj and Hadhrat Imraan bin Husayn 3,Wj<br />

Hadhrat Tha'laba ww narrates that Hadhrat Amr bin Samurah bin Habeeb bin<br />

Abdush Shams SGWj once came to Rasulullaah @& and said, "0 Rasulullaah<br />

@$%! I have stolen a camel from a certain tribe, so please do cleanse me." When<br />

Rasulullaah sent a message to <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribe, <strong>the</strong>y confirmed that<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir camels were missing. Rasulullaah @@ <strong>the</strong>n gave instructions for his<br />

hand to be amputated, upon which he said (to his hand), "All praise belongs to<br />

Allaah Who has cleansed me <strong>of</strong> you who wanted to admit my entire body into<br />

Jahannarn." (2)<br />

Hadhrat Hasan narrates that some fri'ends went to visit Hadhrat Imraan bin<br />

Husayn S,Gm when he was suffering from a disease. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m said, "We are<br />

extremely distressed by what we see <strong>of</strong> your ailing body." "Do not be distressed<br />

by what you see," he said, "What you see is because <strong>of</strong> my sins and those that<br />

Allaah has forgiven (without punishing me) are even more." He <strong>the</strong>n recited <strong>the</strong><br />

verse:<br />

<strong>The</strong> misfortunes that afflict you (in this world) are a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> (evi/)<br />

actions you earn, and (because <strong>of</strong>your many sins, you deserve to suffer<br />
