@$$ <strong>the</strong>n made a gesture with his three fingers to <strong>the</strong> wolf, telling it to leave<br />

<strong>the</strong>m and it left with a howl. ('1<br />

A man from <strong>the</strong> Juhaynah tribe narrates that a delegation from <strong>the</strong> wolves<br />

numbering almost a hundred once arrived at a time when Rasulullaah @?% was<br />

performing salaah and sat down (waiting for him). Rasulullaah <strong>the</strong>n said to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> WG@!%, "This is a delegation from <strong>the</strong> wolves who have come with<br />

<strong>the</strong> proposition that you fix a share <strong>of</strong> your flocks for <strong>the</strong>m, in which case <strong>the</strong> rest<br />

<strong>of</strong> your flocks will be safe from <strong>the</strong>m." When <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> i43GW raised <strong>the</strong> issue<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir poverty (that <strong>the</strong>y would be unable,to afford <strong>the</strong> proposition), Rasulullaah<br />

@@ told <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>n send <strong>the</strong> wolves back. <strong>The</strong> wolves all left howling. (2)<br />

A Lion is Submissive to Rasulullaah @&'s Freed<br />

Slave Hadhrat Safeenah ~,G&&j<br />

Rasulullaah @@Is freed slave Hadhrat Safeenah ?3G$is says, "I was once on<br />

board a ship when it shipwrecked. I managed to cling on to one <strong>of</strong> its planks,<br />

which carried me to a dense forest. A lion lived in <strong>the</strong> forest and (when it saw me)<br />

it started coming towards me to attack me. I however addressed it saying, "0 Abu<br />

Haarith! I am <strong>the</strong> freed slave <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah m." It immediately lowered its<br />

head as it came closer and continued nudging me with its shoulder until I was<br />

clear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest and on a main road. It <strong>the</strong>n purred, a gesture I interpreted as a<br />

word <strong>of</strong> farewell. That was <strong>the</strong> last I saw <strong>of</strong> it. (3)<br />

In ano<strong>the</strong>r narration, Hadhrat Safeenah 9Bw says, "We were once at sea when<br />

we were shipwrecked. (When we managed to make our way to land) We were lost<br />

and did not know <strong>the</strong> road when we suddenly beheld a lion that came before us.<br />

As my companions retreated, I went towards it and said, 'I am Safeenah, a<br />

companion <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah and we have lost our way.' <strong>The</strong> lion <strong>the</strong>n walked<br />

ahead <strong>of</strong> me until we reached <strong>the</strong> main road. <strong>The</strong>reafter, it nudged me as if to<br />

point <strong>the</strong> road to me, but I sensed that it meant to bid us farewell." (4)<br />

Hadhrat Ibn Munkadir reports that Rasulullaah @&IS freed slave Hadhrat<br />

Safeenah !3Gw was once in Roman territory when he ei<strong>the</strong>r became separated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> army or was taken prisoner. As he was searching for <strong>the</strong><br />

army, he was suddenly confronted by a lion. He <strong>the</strong>n addressed <strong>the</strong> lion saying,<br />

"0 Abu Haarith! I am Rasulullaah w ' s freed slave." He <strong>the</strong>n explained his<br />

situation and <strong>the</strong> lion came closer, with its tail wagging until it stood beside him. ,<br />

(1) Waaqidi.<br />

(2) Abu Nu'aym. Bayhaqi and Bazzaar have reported similar narrations, as quoted in AlBidaayah wan<br />

Nihaayah (Vo1.6 Pg.146).<br />

(3) Haakim (Vo1.3 Pg.606), reporting from reliable sources as confirmed by Dhahabi. Bukhaari has<br />

reported a similar narration in his Taareekh (Voi.2 Pg.179), as had Abu Nu'aym in his Hilya (Vol.1<br />

Pg.369) and his Dalaa'il (Pg.212). Ibn Mandah has also reported it, as quoted in A/ Bidaayah wan<br />

Nihaayah (Vo1.5 Pg.316) and so has Tabraani, as quoted in Majma'uzZawaalid(Vol.9 Pg.366).<br />
