<strong>The</strong> Response <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah m 's Poets when<br />

Allaah Revealed <strong>the</strong> verse: "Only deviant people<br />

follow <strong>the</strong> poets"<br />

Hadhrat Abul Hasan <strong>the</strong> freed slave <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Tameem Daari ?&GWj narrates<br />

that when <strong>the</strong> verse:<br />

tr'itd:.\+ ijy) (0 (oJ~JI , rI+JI;)<br />

Only deviant people follow <strong>the</strong> poets. {Surah Shu'araa; verse 224)<br />

was revealed, Hadhrat Hassaan bin Thaabit 4=, Hadhrat Abdullaah bin<br />

Rawaaha !B13W6 and Hadhrat Ka'b bin Maalik %%%!& all came weeping to<br />

Rasulullaah @@. <strong>The</strong>y said, "Allaah knew well that we are all poets wh,en he<br />

revealed this verse (<strong>the</strong> verse <strong>the</strong>refore refers to us)." Rasulullaah @% <strong>the</strong>n<br />

recited <strong>the</strong> verse:<br />

Except those who have ma an, who do good acts.. .<br />

"That is you," Rasulullaah @@ said.<br />

. . .who remember Allaah abundantly.. .<br />

'That is also you," Rasulullaah m said.<br />

.,.and who avenge <strong>the</strong>mselves after being oppressed (by counteracting<br />

<strong>the</strong> satirical poetly that <strong>the</strong> Kuffaar direct at Islaam with poetly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir -<br />

own). {Surah Shu'araa, verse 227)<br />

"And that is also you," Rasulullaah m said (you men are <strong>the</strong>refore excluded<br />

kbm <strong>the</strong> deviant poets). (2)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Longing to Meet Allaah and Dislike<br />

to Meet Him<br />

Hadhrat Ataa bin Saa'ib narrates that <strong>the</strong> first time he saw Hadhrat Abdur<br />

Rahmaan bin Abu Layla was when he saw an old man with white hair and<br />

a white beard following a funeral procession on his donkey. He was narrating<br />

from someone else that Rasulullaah @@ said, "Whoever loves Allaah, Allaah<br />

loves to meet him and'whoever dislikes meeting Allaah, Allaah dislikes<br />

meeting him." When <strong>the</strong> people present <strong>the</strong>re started to weep, he askeh, "What<br />

makes you all weep?" <strong>The</strong>y replied, "We dislike death." "That is not what is<br />

meant," he explained, "what is meant is that when a person is about to die, he<br />

will like To meet Allaah when (by <strong>the</strong> angels) he is given <strong>the</strong> good news <strong>of</strong>:<br />

(1) Ibn ~arder, as quoted in <strong>the</strong> R,iseer<strong>of</strong> Ibn Ka<strong>the</strong>er (Vol.3 Pg.328).<br />

(2) Ibn Is'baaq Ibn Abi Haatim and Ibn Jareer, as quoted in <strong>the</strong> Tafseer<strong>of</strong> Ibn Ka<strong>the</strong>er (Vo1.3 Pg.354).<br />

Haakim (d.3 Pg.488) has reported a similar narration.
