Dislike for Accepting Remuneration for<br />

Teaching <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan<br />

Rasulullaah m 's Advice to Hadhrat Ubaadah<br />

s,g~j and Ha&rat Ubay "J,""- eS '.' in this Regard<br />

Hadhrat Ubaadah bin Saamit $&%&j says, "Because Rasulullaah '&% was very<br />

occupied, he would hand over to one <strong>of</strong> us any person who migrated so that we<br />

may teach him <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan. Rasulullaah @?% once placed in my care a person<br />

who stayed in my house, ate meals with me and whom I taught <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan.<br />

When he returned home, he felt that he owed me something and <strong>the</strong>refore gave<br />

me a bow as a gift, I had never seen a bow made <strong>of</strong> better wood nor more<br />

flexible. 1 however went to Rasulullaah and asked him his opinion.<br />

Rasulullaah @%$ said, "It is a burning ember that you are hanging between your<br />

shoulders." (2)<br />

Hadhrat Ubay bin Ka'b WW44 once taught a Surah to a man who gave him a<br />

garment or a shawl as,a gift. When he informed Rasulullaah @& about this,<br />

Rasulullaah i!$%$ remarked, "If you wear it, you will be wearing a garment <strong>of</strong><br />

fire." (3) Ano<strong>the</strong>r narration states that when Hadhrat Ubay W%%j taught <strong>the</strong><br />

Qur'aan to a man, he gave him a bow as a gift. (4)<br />

Hadhrat Tufayl bin Amr 3,m says, "When Hadhrat Ubay SGW taught me <strong>the</strong><br />

Qur'aan, I gave him a bow as a gift. When he went to Rasulullaah <strong>the</strong> next<br />

morning with <strong>the</strong> bow hanging around his neck, Rasulullaah %%% asked, "Who<br />

gave you this bow, 0 Ubay?" Hadhrat Ubay 3,w replied, "It was Tufayl bin Amr<br />

Dowsi to whom I had taught <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan." Rasulullaah @%! remarked, 'You are<br />

hanging it around your neck when it is a spark from Jahannam?!" "0 Rasulullaah<br />

m!"<br />

Hadhrat Ubay said, "But we even eat from <strong>the</strong>ir food." Rasulullaah<br />

%@ said, "<strong>The</strong>re is no harm in eating <strong>the</strong> food that was prepared for o<strong>the</strong>rs and<br />

which you ate by being <strong>the</strong>re. However, if <strong>the</strong> food is prepared specially for you<br />

and you eat from it, you will be eating from your share (<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aakhirah, because<br />

<strong>of</strong> which you will have less <strong>the</strong>re)." (5)<br />

Rasulullaah W 's Words to Hadhrat Awf bin<br />

Maalik !&ii$&+j and Ano<strong>the</strong>r Sahabi SG(&&j<br />

in this Regard<br />

Hadhrat Awf bin Maalik 5EEiX reports that <strong>the</strong>re was a man with him to whom<br />

(I) Ibn Jareer, as quoted in Kanzul U/ntnaal(Vol.l Ps.228).<br />

(2) Tabraani and Bayhaqi, as quoted in Kanzul Um~naa/(Vol.l Pg.231). Haakim (Vo1.3 Pg.356) has also<br />

reported <strong>the</strong> narration from reliable sources as confirmed by Dhahabi.<br />

(3) Abd bin Humayd, as quoted in Kat~zul Umtnaal (Vol.1 Pg.231). Ibn Maajah, Rooyaani and Bayhaqi<br />

have reported a similar narration.<br />

(4) Sa'eed bin Mansoor, as quoted in Kanzul Utn~naal(Vol.i Pg.230).<br />

(5) Baghawi and Ibn Asaakir, as quoted in Kat~i.ul Utnmaal (Vol.1 Pg.231). Tabraan~ has reported a<br />

similar narration but Haythami (Vo1.4 P9.95) has commented on <strong>the</strong> chain olnarralors.
