A Jinn brought <strong>the</strong> News <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah m 's<br />

Prophethood to Hadhrat Sawaad bin Qaarib %!%j<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar 9GWi says, "Whenever I heard Hadhrat Umar<br />

%lG@i say, 'I think that this is like this,' it would always be exactly as he thought.<br />

However, we were once sitting toge<strong>the</strong>r when a handsome man passed by and<br />

Hadhrat Umar %lGw said, 'Ei<strong>the</strong>r my assumption has been wrong or this man is<br />

still on his religion <strong>of</strong> ignorance or he had been a fortune-teller. Bring that man<br />

to me.' When <strong>the</strong> man was brought, Hadhrat Umar %w told him what he had<br />

just mentioned. <strong>The</strong> man remarked, 'To this day have I never seen any Muslim<br />

man being confronted in this manner.' Hadhrat Umar ?Zi&W!& <strong>the</strong>n said to him, 'I<br />

command you to inform me (about yourself).'<br />

<strong>The</strong> man said, 'I had been a fortune-teller during <strong>the</strong> Period <strong>of</strong> Ignorance.' 'What<br />

was <strong>the</strong> strangest incident that you experienced with your Jinn?' <strong>The</strong> man related,<br />

'I was in <strong>the</strong> marketplace one day when he came to me and I could see that he,<br />

was extremely scared. He recited <strong>the</strong> following couplets (which mean):<br />

Wave you not seen <strong>the</strong> ]inn and <strong>the</strong>ir bewilderment?<br />

Have you not seen <strong>the</strong>ir despondence after <strong>the</strong>ir retreat?<br />

And that <strong>the</strong>y have now joined <strong>the</strong> ranks <strong>of</strong> young camels and <strong>the</strong>ir saddle<br />

blankets?(')<br />

'He is speaking <strong>the</strong> truth,' Hadhrat Umar %.WW said, 'I was also sleeping near<br />

<strong>the</strong> idols <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen when someone brought a calf and slaughtered it.<br />

Just <strong>the</strong>n, someone screamed so loudly that I had never before heard such a loud<br />

scream. <strong>The</strong> voice said, '0 Jaleeh! <strong>The</strong> matter is one <strong>of</strong> salvation and <strong>the</strong> man is<br />

an eloquent man saying, 'Laa Ilaaha IlJallaahM<strong>The</strong> people <strong>the</strong>re sprang up in<br />

surprise, but I told <strong>the</strong>m to remain where <strong>the</strong>y were until I found out who was<br />

behind it. <strong>The</strong> voice <strong>the</strong>n called out again, '0 Jaleeh! <strong>The</strong> matter is one <strong>of</strong><br />

salvation and <strong>the</strong> man is an eloquent man saying, Zaa ilaaha Illallaah"1 <strong>the</strong>n left<br />

and we did not have to wait long afterwards when it was said that this referred to<br />

Rasulullaah @@%."I<br />

<strong>The</strong> man mentioned in <strong>the</strong> narration above was Hadhrat Sawaad bin Qaarib<br />

Hadhrat Muhammad bin Ka'b Qurazi reports that Hadhrat Umar 3XiWj was<br />

sitting somewhere one day when a man passed by. Someone asked, "0 Ameerul<br />

Mu'mineen! Do you know who that passer-by is?" When Hadhrat Umar<br />

asked who he was, <strong>the</strong> people replied, "He is Sawaad bin Qaarib, <strong>the</strong> man who<br />

was informed about <strong>the</strong> coming <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah @@ by <strong>the</strong> )inn in his service."<br />

Hadhrat Umar %w sent for <strong>the</strong> man and (when he arrived) asked, "Are you<br />

Sawaad bin Qaarib?" When he replied in <strong>the</strong> affirmative, Hadhrat Umar ~,13W<br />

asked, "Are you still practising ,fortune-telling?" Hadhrat Sawaad 3,w became<br />

angry and said, "0 Ameerul Mu'mineen! No one has ever confronted me in this<br />

(1) <strong>The</strong>se words explain how <strong>the</strong> Jinn who had been frequenting <strong>the</strong> heavens to hear <strong>the</strong> discussions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> angels were subsequently stopped when revelation started coming to Rasulullaah m.<br />

<strong>The</strong>v were now forced to remain on earth iust like camels and o<strong>the</strong>r creatures.
