Allaah: Commonly spelt "Allah", He is <strong>the</strong> One and Only being worthy <strong>of</strong> worship<br />

Who has no partners or children and is unlike anything we know. He is <strong>the</strong><br />

Creator and Sustainer <strong>of</strong> all creation and controls everything in <strong>the</strong> universe.<br />

Only He knows, sees and hears everything and will only be seen by <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong><br />

Jannah. Non-Muslims refer to Him as "<strong>the</strong> God <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Muslims".<br />

Allaahu Akbar: An Arabic expression translated as "Allaah is <strong>the</strong> Greatest". This<br />

expression is referred to as <strong>the</strong> "Takbeer".<br />

Ambiyaa: see Nabi<br />

Amaanah: Literally translated as "trust" and refers to something given as a trust<br />

for ano<strong>the</strong>r to keep until <strong>the</strong> owner wants it back.<br />

Ameer: <strong>The</strong> word means "leader" and may refer to any Muslim leader or<br />

commander appointed to lead o<strong>the</strong>rs. See also Ameerul Mu'mineen<br />

Ameerul Mu'mineen: <strong>The</strong> term means "Leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mu'mineen" and is a title<br />

reserved for someone who leads <strong>the</strong> Muslims. It was first used for Hadhrat Umar<br />

%,%%>.<br />

Ansaar: Literally means "helpers". This term refers to those Muslims during <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah @?@ who were native inhabitants <strong>of</strong> Madinah and who<br />

helped <strong>the</strong> Muhaajireen who migrated to Madinah. A single person from amongst<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ansaar is referred to as an Ansaari.<br />

Ansaari: see Ansaar<br />

Asr: One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five Fardh salaahs. It is performed between late afternoon and<br />

sunset.<br />

Aws: One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two prominent tribes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ansaar. <strong>The</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>the</strong> Khazraj<br />

tribe.<br />

Awqiya: <strong>The</strong> equivalent <strong>of</strong> 40 Dirhams, with one Dirham equal to approximately<br />

3.1 g <strong>of</strong> silver.<br />

B<br />

Badr: A place approximately 160 km south <strong>of</strong> Madinah where <strong>the</strong> Muslim army<br />

led by Rasulullaah @& fought <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen army in <strong>the</strong> first battle that <strong>the</strong><br />

Muslims ever fought. Although only 313 in number and extremely short <strong>of</strong> arms<br />

and transport, <strong>the</strong> Muslims convincingly defeated <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen, who<br />

numbered more than a thousand and were armed to <strong>the</strong> teeth. This battle took<br />

place two years after Rasulullaah migrated to Madinah and is known as <strong>the</strong><br />

Battle <strong>of</strong> Badr.<br />

Bani Israa'eel: Literally translated as "<strong>The</strong> children <strong>of</strong> Israa'eel". Israa'eel was <strong>the</strong><br />

title <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Ya'qoob @&, who was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Is'haaq @W and <strong>the</strong><br />

grandson <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Ibraheem @!%. <strong>The</strong> Bani Israa'eel are <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong><br />

descendants <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Ya'qoob @W. <strong>The</strong>y are more commonly known as <strong>the</strong><br />

Jews<br />

Baqi: Also known as Jannatul Baqi or Baqi'ul Gharqad. This is <strong>the</strong> graveyard <strong>of</strong><br />

Madinah.<br />

Barzakh: <strong>The</strong> stage <strong>of</strong> existence between <strong>the</strong> time when a person passes away
