where he found Hadhrat Haarith bin Maal* Wm asleep. Nudging him with his<br />

foot, Rasulullaah w said, "Raise you head." As he raised his head, Hadhrat<br />

Haarith -j exclaimed, "May my parents be sacrificed for you, 0 Rasulullaah<br />

w!" "How do you feel this morning, 0 Haarith bin Maalik?" Rasulullaah @%$<br />

asked. Hadhrat ~aarith Ww replied, "I feel like a true Mu'min this morning, 0<br />

Rasulullaah w . " Rasulullaah @@ said, "Every fact requires substantiation,<br />

so how do you substantiate your statement?" Hadhrat Haarith BEw replied, "I<br />

have turned my eyes away from this world, I keep myself thirsty during <strong>the</strong> days<br />

(because I am fasting) and I stay awake (in Ibaadah) during <strong>the</strong> nights. In<br />

addition to that, it is as if I can actually see <strong>the</strong> Arsh <strong>of</strong> my Rabb and as if I can<br />

actually see <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Jannah visiting each o<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Jahannam<br />

barking at each o<strong>the</strong>r." Rasulullaah @@ remarked, "You are a man whose heart<br />

bllaah has illuminated. You have understood (<strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> Imaan) so now<br />

remain steadfast." (I)<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r narration names <strong>the</strong> Sahabi %X4&G as Hadhrat Haaritha bin Nu'maan<br />

and states that Rasulullaah @%$ said to him, "You have seen (<strong>the</strong> reality<br />

<strong>of</strong> Imaan), so remain steadfast. He is a man in whose heart Allaah has<br />

illuminated Imaan." "0 Rasulullaah @%$!" Hadhrat Haaritha !&W&$ <strong>the</strong>n asked,<br />

"Pray to Allaah that I become a martyr." Rasulullaah '@& <strong>the</strong>n made <strong>the</strong> du'aa for<br />

him. One day <strong>the</strong> announcement was made, "0 horsemen <strong>of</strong> Allaah! Mount your<br />

horses (and ride out in Jihaad)." Hadhrat Haaritha %,w was <strong>the</strong> first to take to<br />

his horse and also became <strong>the</strong> first to be martyred. (2)<br />

Hadhrat Anas ?&M4G narrates that Rasulullaah<br />

was walking somewhere<br />

when he met a young man from <strong>the</strong> Ansaar. "How do you feel this morning, 0<br />

Haarith?" Rasulullaah @@ asked. He replied, "This morning I feel like a true<br />

believer in Allaah." "Consider well what you say," Rasulullaah @& advised,<br />

"because every statement requires substantiation." He replied, "0 Rasulullaah<br />

w! I have turned my eyes away from this world.. ." <strong>The</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hadith is<br />

similar to <strong>the</strong> one quoted above. (3)<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r narration states that Rasulullaah k$& said, "Every statement requires<br />

substantiation, so how do you substantiate your Imaan?" (4)<br />

Rasulullaah @?@ asks Hadhrat Mu'aadh BFh32<br />

how he Felt and his Reply<br />

- Hadhrat Anas bin Maalik narrates that when Hadhrat Mu'aadh bin Jabal<br />

43332!% arrived one day, Rasulullaah @% asked him, "How do you feel this<br />

morning, 0 Mu'aadh?" Hadhrat Mu'aadh 4?ii replied, "I feel like a true believer<br />

in Allaah." "Every statement requires substantiation," Rasulullaah w told him,<br />

(1) Ibn Asaakir.<br />

(2) Askari, as quoted in Muntakhab ffinkul Ummaal (Vol.5 Pg. 160).<br />

(3) Ibn Najjaar, as quoted in Muntakhab Kanzul Ummaal(Vo1.5 Pg.161).<br />

(4) Ibn Mubaarak in his Zuhd. Haafidh has commented on <strong>the</strong> chain <strong>of</strong> narrators, as quoted in<br />

lsaabah (Vol.1 Pg.289). Abdur Razzaaq has reported a similar narration, as have Tabraani, Ibn<br />

Mandah, Bayhaqi, Bazzaar and Tabraani, but Haythami (Vol.1 Pg.57) has commented on Bazzaar's<br />

and Tabraani's chains <strong>of</strong> narrators.
