Key Indicators for Measuring
State of Conservation
Indicator Periodicity Location of records
1. External
appearance
1:
Schwetzingen’s status as a cultural heritage
site of outstanding significance is largely
dependent on the authenticity of the picture
it presents, that of an 18th-century summer
residence with gardens dating from the
latter half of the 18th-century. Points of
comparison for measuring the preservation
of Schwetzingen’s external appearance take
the form of textual and graphical sources
depicting the state of the property in the
18th-century. The Gardens Management
Plan delivers a detailed comparative analysis
of these sources, setting them alongside the
subsequent historical state of conservation
of the gardens and the gardens‘ present
appearance.
The Images volume appended to the
nomination includes extensive photographic
records of the site in 2006, thus providing
ample opportunity for comparison. The
implementation of the measures outlined in
the Management Plan, and the continuation
of the conservation work detailed in
the buildings management and gardens
management plans represent reliable
measures of whether and to what extent the
appearance of the property has changed.
Not only is the state of the property itself
important fo the appearance of the ensemble,
however; the conservation of views from the
gardens, historic lines of sight, and views
of the town, palace and gardens from the
annual Regional Council in Karlsruhe, Dept. of
Monument Preservation
2. State of buildings annual Baden-Württemberg State Agency for
Property Assets and Construction
Mannheim Office, Schwetzingen Building
and Maintenance Dept.
3. State of gardens annual Castles and Gardens, Bruchsal
surrounding countryside are also essential to
the overall Baroque picture. The photographic
records of 2006, along with the photographic
evidence in the Buildings Management Plan
and the Gardens Management Plan, provide
significant opportunity for comparison in this
aspect of the property’s appearance.
2:
The most important measures of the state
of conservation of the buildings in the
property are structural stability and resistance
to deterioration from the elements. The
Buildings Management Plan lists the
work necessary for the preservation of each
individual building. Any neglect of this
maintenance would result in a deterioration in
the state of conservation of the buildings.
3:
The state of conservation of the gardens is
similarly dependent on constant maintenance
work. Work to be carried out is described in
the Gardens Management Plan, which also
provides expert justification for the measures
detailed. Neglect of such work would not only
bring about short-term deterioration of the
overall appearance of the gardens; it would
also put the gardens‘ state of conservation at
long-term risk, since it would mean that vital
gardening knowledge and skills would be lost
through lack of use.
