Topical Comparison
Summer residence: Beloeil is the ancestral seat
of the aristocratic de Ligne family.
Synthesis of gardening styles: The Baroque
garden dating from 1760 has been preserved
in its basic structure and substance, with
small-scale alterations that do not impair the
layout; some loosening of the formal character
within clearly defined areas by means of
small architectural elements; landscaped
extensions outside the formal areas (including
the kitchen garden) separated by a canal and
approached by a bridge; no 19th- or 20thcentury
redesign.
Furnishing: Statuary largely preserved, in
particular the Neptune group at one end of the
central basin. Buildings, including numerous
bridges, the “Pomona Pavilion” in the kitchen
garden and a number of architectural
elements in the bosquets, preserved as well.
Further original buildings survive in the
landscape garden – the summer house on
“Flora’s Isle”, the “temple of Morpheus” and an
artificially ruined temple.
Technical monuments: none documented.
Authenticity: The garden is largely preserved
in its original layout and form, with a number
of furnishing pieces and very few additions.
Even the remains of a bridge at the end of the
garden have simply been left in place. Other
built elements such as the basins are hardly
altered at all, although the need for some
restoration is currently being determined;
distinctive trees have habitually been replaced
by the same species and in the same location,
at least from the first half of the 20th-century
onwards.
Summary
The estate is comparable to Schwetzingen in
that it is a synthesis of two gardening styles.
The specific characteristics of the two styles,
however, are different due to regional factors
and the difference in political status of the
two estates.
