Just as in English, the Greek demonstratives can also modify nouns. When they do,
they will not only agree with that noun in gender, number, and case, but will always
stand in Predicate Position with the modied noun. [Remember that the Predicate
Position will be either pronoun-article-noun or article-noun-pronoun]:
This apostle is seeing that (woman).
These (women) are seeing those
apostles.
This (woman) is destroying those
works.
These children are destroying that
work.
Uses of Demonstratives
1) As Stand-Alone Pronouns (“Substantivally”, like a noun)
The near and far demonstratives can be translated rather simply. As we translate, we
need to incorporate the various pieces of information involved: the direction (near or
far), the gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), the number (singular or plural), and
case (signaling the grammatical function of the pronoun in its own clause). Putting
these together will come rather quickly.
This (man) is seeing that (woman).
These (women) are seeing those (men).
This (woman) is destroying those
(things).
These (things) are destroying that
(thing).
