Adjectival clauses, by denition, modify nouns or pronouns<br />

Clauses used to describe or identify a noun or pronoun are adjectival. The most<br />

common kind of adjectival clause is introduced by a relative pronoun (not a<br />

conjunction). English relative pronouns include: who, whose, whom, what, which,<br />

and that.<br />

“…the disciples who had seen the Lord…<br />

<br />

Noun clauses, by denition, function as if they were nouns. Such clauses,<br />

therefore, can serve as the subjects or objects of a verb.<br />

the disciples knew the Lord<br />

[Direct Object: simple noun]<br />

the disciples knew that the Gospel was true<br />

[Direct Object: noun clause]
