Revisit
THE BANGKOK SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND
137
Historically, the Bangkok School for the Blinds
building was viewed as a modernist architecture that
adopted the ‘low-cost’ construction approach prevalent
in foreign countries at the time. The building’s
prefabricated concrete architecture appeared
to be the result of a straightforward adaptation
of a globally used construction technique. Yet, a
prefabricated concrete structure designed and
constructed in one country was not necessarily
identical of those built in the countries from which
it originated. This is especially true when you look
at the differing contexts between developed and
developing countries and how they affect the
different possibilities and limits of building construction.
While the characteristics of prefabricated
concrete structures, from structural members to
installation details, may appear to be similar or
identical in some cases, certain production-related
conditions resulting from economic situations and
labor, including the significant influence that this
construction technology has on architects, who
are the creators of architecture, are all important
factors contributing to each architectural creation’s
individual characteristic.
Revisiting the prefabricated concrete architecture
of the Bangkok School for the Blind is thus not a
search for the pioneering model of other buildings
with a similar architectural style that followed in the
hope of obtaining a deeper understanding of the
origin and influence of such a design. Instead, it
seeks to examine prefabricated concrete as a process
that was directly related to economic factors,
labor conditions, as well as the architect’s evolving
identity, which are no less important than the architectural
ideas and styles that influenced him.
Concrete is not a material but a process
The belief that prefabricated concrete structures
built outside of Europe are the same or similar to
those built in European countries where the technology
originated stems in part from the misconception
that concrete is a material in the same way that
wood and rocks are, when the reality is quite different.
Concrete is made by a synthetic, rather than a
natural, process. While concrete is composed of
cement, sand, gravel, and water, these components
cannot produce concrete on their own. Labor, both
intellectual and manual, play an important role in the
creation of concrete. Instead of regarding concrete
as a material, it would have made more sense if we
thought of it as a process in which labor constitutes
as an integral part of its creation.
