Society of China (ASC) and Tongji University the copubilshers.
The goal of the Architecture Asia Forum
Series is to highlight the development of contemporary
architecture in ARCACIA member countries, as well as
to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas, and
the endeavors of Asian architects on a global scale.
The first five-hour online lecture was held on December
3, 2021, with over 5,000 listeners participating from
across the world. The event, co-hosted by Architecture
1
Abu Sayeed M. Ahmed
President of Architects Regional Council Asia
Professor Wu Jiang
Design and Research
Architecture Asia Forum Series
New Cultural Identify
ARCHITECTURE ASIA FORUM SERIES
Asia and the Association of Siamese Architects under
Royal Patronage, welcomed Abu Sayeed M. Ahmed,
President of the Architects Regional Council Asia
(ARCASIA), Chana Sumpalung, President of the Association
of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage,
and Professor Wu Jiang, Editor of Architecture Asia, as
opening and closing speakers.
Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee of HAS
Design and Research, the forum’s facilitators, invited
ten Thai architecture firms to join the discussion and
explore potential trajectories as well as share their
experiences reflecting interesting architectural tendencies
in Thailand through presentations of their research
and projects. Kulthida opened the forum by presenting
HAS’s own research project, which questions architecture’s
role as a visual representation of cultural perception.
The presentation transported viewers back in time
to observe the evolution of contemporary architecture
in Asian countries as a result of their search for what
would become today’s architectural design whose existence
demonstrates the context and culture to which
they belong. Since the establishment of the pioneering
architecture firms in the 1980s, to how it referenced
the conventions of traditional Thai architecture, then to
how it challenged the preexisting norms with designs
that are different while still navigating more fitting and
contemporary architectural styles and approaches,
when architectural design in Thailand fully opens to
more diverse stylistic and conceptual possibilities. Yet,
despite such progress, the skylines of major Southeast
Asian cities are barely distinguishable.
The extensive research on the new cultural identity
has resulted in the discovery of a variety of design
techniques that are reflective of each country’s distinct
culture. Singapore’s architectural design reflects the
city-evolution state’s into a garden city and megacity, as
well as an attempt to adapt to the tropical environment
through design that incorporates shade, ventilation,
and green spaces. While one of Indonesia’s commonalities
with Thailand is the issue of urban density, the
Indonesian architecture created within the hospitality
sector, such as island resorts, has been developed from
the geographic conditions of rice terraces and the use
of locally sourced materials, particularly bamboo, which
has contributed to Indonesia’s distinctive bamboo architecture
gaining worldwide recognition. The genesis and
growth of Hong Kong architecture, which arose from
high-density urban settlement, has given birth to several
attempts to maximize the use of confined spaces in
high-rise structures to deliver the best possible efficiency
and maximizing potential. Such information has
compelled many to look back and question the identity
Thai architecture’s identity. The contrast between how
Bangkok is viewed through its skyline and an individual’s
experiences of the city was discovered as a result.
