3D Printed Concrete
materials
Ana Anton, Andrei Jipa, Benjamin Dillenburger
Ana Anton, Andrei Jipa, and Benjamin
Dillenburger, a team of researchers at
ETH Zurich, have created a machine
that controls the setting rate of concrete
to offer a seamless transition between
casting and 3D printing so that structures
can be made that use less material.
The system called Fast Complexity
combines two existing technologies for
creating concrete forms: 3D printing
concrete and casting concrete into
formwork. By controlling the setting rate
of concrete, the system can either 3D
print the fast-hardening concrete for
more structural elements without formwork
or extrude a more fluid concrete
that can flow into castings. The system
could be used to make more efficient
structures and could lead to a reduction
in the amount of concrete used to create
buildings as only the material that is
needed would be poured or printed.
According to Anton, both the geometry
of the slab and the deposition path are
optimized to only add material where
needed. Such geometries would be
otherwise too expensive to fabricate.
That reduction is project-specific and
depends on structural evaluation, but
compared to a massive slab, there is a
lot of space for material savings. This
opens up new material savings and
design potential.
Bendable Concrete
Engineered Cementitious Concrete (ECC)
Victor C. Li
Grove
Street Bridge
Concrete is definitely not the first thing
that comes to mind when thinking of
the word ‘flexible,’ but scientists at the
University of Michigan have invented a
new type of concrete by incorporating
silica sand and polyvinyl alcohol fibers
into traditional concrete mixes, they’ve
developed a new kind of concrete that’s
500 times harder to crack. It’s also
lighter, making it easier to install and
replace.
Engineered Cementitious Concrete
(ECC) is a flexible developed by Victor
C. Li and his colleagues at the University
of Michigan. This advanced fiber-reinforced
concrete behaves in some ways
more like a metallic material—particularly
in the way it responds to loads. The
microcracks it sustains under duress
do not compromise a structure in the
same way that larger cracks would in
traditional, steel-reinforced concrete.
ECC could make a huge impact on
the structural security of buildings
and bridges in areas with high seismic
activity. It will also help concrete last
longer since cracking invites damaging
moisture to infiltrate the structure and
erode it over time. It is now in use today
worldwide such as in Japan’s tallest
residential tower in Osaka, as well as in
the jointless Mihara bridge in Hokkaido.
The use of ECC on the the Grove Street
Bridge deck in Michigan, is estimated
to have a cost savings of 37 percent
and carbon emissions reduction of 39
percent.
