THE BANGKOK SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND
141
เป็นการ make a statement ได้หรือไม่ ดร.
concrete elements from a factory to a building
site, which ended up raising the actual construction
cost even more. In a recent interview he gave
in February 2023, Dr. Sumet Jumsai na Ayutthaya
remarked, “It may be even more expensive than
a typical construction process.” So, in the case
of the Bangkok School for the Blind, when the
employed construction method did not appear to
contribute significantly to cost reduction due to
low wages and the fact that the manufacturing
technology for prefabricated concrete was expensive,
could the work be regarded as his attempt
to “make a statement’? Sure, Dr. Sumet replied.
“It was like the Robot building [...]. I had recently
graduated from abroad and was highly driven to
create something fresh and pioneering for the
country, and the prefab method wasn’t that well
known at the time.”
If the underlying reason was to make an architectural
statement rather than an attempt to reduce
construction costs, the prefabricated concrete
structure of the Bangkok School for the Blind
differs significantly from those built in Western
countries, particularly in terms of how such a
structural system influenced the architect’s status
as a creator.
Adrian Forty, a British architectural historian, stated
that when prefabricated concrete was invented for
the first time in Europe in the 1950s, architects
embraced the new construction system because it
allowed them to develop prototypes that would be
used in large-scale industrial productions. But, as
the new construction system gained popularity, the
architect’s role was reduced to that of a ‘technician,’
whose main responsibility was to determine how
concrete parts could be arranged and assembled
on site in order for all prefabricated elements to
deliver maximum functional benefits. (Forty 2012,
248-249)
While during the late 1960s, prefabricated concrete
systems posed a challenge to the creative
role of architects in Europe, Dr. Sumet’s role and
stature as a modernist architect in Thailand was
evolving as a result of his implementation of the
technology. It should be emphasized that, at the
time, prefabricated concrete structures were still
not well received in Thailand because the majority
of people believed it was a lower-quality and
weaker construction method.
