Other examples of well-known Brutalist architecture include
Boston City Hall in Massachusetts, Trellick Tower in London,
and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California.
All these three buildings use off-form concrete as their main
feature, with the simplicity of the bare concrete surface
making the shape and appearance of the building complex
in its design stand out. In the simplicity of the bare concrete
surface, difficulty lies in the construction of buildings with
complex shapes and appearances. Successful use of offform
concrete requires meticulous design and planning,
including installing wood formwork, binding the steel frame,
pouring concrete, and the process of formwork removal.
Good planning will save construction time and cost and
control the quality and beauty of the bare concrete surface
as desired.

Although Brutalist architecture was prevalent after the war,
it has been criticized for being ugly, dull, and colorless.
However, architects who love this style of architecture argue
that Brutalist design remains an important architectural
style that continues to influence contemporary architects
and designers due to its simplicity and straightforwardness.
In recent years, Brutalist architecture has gained more
attention by using off-form concrete in modern buildings
such as residences, apartment buildings, or museums.
For example, the famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando
used off-form concrete as the basis for his architectural
and landscape architecture designs, and those works are
admired worldwide. His architectural style is classified as
critical regionalism.
Brutalist architecture is also passed on to today’s architects,
a simple design concept emphasizing the natural texture
of the concrete or building materials without color, without
additional decorations. The use of off-form concrete these
days is more convenient since the construction techniques
are modern, including the application of BIM technology in
designing and drafting, concrete technology that produces
flowable concrete that is easy to pour into forms, formwork
systems that are convenient to install and dismantle, and
construction management system techniques that help to
plan and monitor construction within a budget. These will
help architects use their imagination and creativity more
conveniently when designing modern buildings. In the
end, Brutalist architecture shows us that in simplicity lies
complexity. Just dare to think and dare to do. The complexity
becomes simple.
