While Yellow House’s boxy, monolithic concrete
mass appears so dense and solid that the structure
would probably make one think it was probably
built with a load-bearing wall system. However, the
house is built with a skeleton system made up of
columns and beams, as are most houses in Thailand.
The solidity and enclosure are the result of
the design concept, which divides the building’s
layout into varying levels of accessibility.
The bedroom, like the yolk of a fried egg, sits in the
center, surrounded by different functional spaces
such as bathrooms, the living room, the kitchen,
and the workspace. The key feature of the design
is that each of the four sides contains a separate
courtyard, which connects the functional spaces
to the outside environment and welcomes natural
light into the interior living spaces.
The walls highlight the unmistakable role of concrete
in this home. These walls, built with the same
proportions, structural elements, and finishing
materials, are intended to facilitate continuity
and connection between the interior and exterior
spaces. While concrete was not the first option
the three architects considered, they eventually
came up with a solution using a construction
technique in which a wooden mold was used to
create a pattern on the concrete walls. The molds
resulted in interior and exterior walls with highly
similar finishes, resulting in a house with thick
concrete walls where details and traces of the
concrete casting process are fully showcased
without being clad or covered.
about houses, design,
and architecture
The deliberate display of construction techniques
can also be seen in how the design does not
attempt to conceal the fact that the house is built
with the column-beam system rather than the loadbearing
wall system. It can be seen in the purposeful
exhibit of imperfections of surfaces created by
the concrete casting process, from perforations to
the way gravels are visible on the concrete finish
rather than being concealed. It’s the kind of imperfection
that would never be allowed to exist if the
house was built with a load-bearing wall system,
as it could be interpreted as structural instability
or unstandardized engineering.
From this perspective, it is clear that, while the
Yellow House’s design incorporates concrete
as a decorative element, the concrete itself is an
intriguing implication of the house’s true construction
system. At the end of the day, the similarities
and differences between Yellow Mini and Yellow
House exemplify interesting interpretations of
architecture through the use and existence of
concrete.
