คอนกรีต สลักกระบวนการเกิด และเส้นทางเดินของตัวเอง

The once-bold use of concrete gives
way to a more controlled usage,
from dominant to restrained and
carefully integrated as parts within
the whole. It was a paradigm shift
for concrete. Have all the crazes
until then disappeared entirely?
Or has it just become implicit, submerged
in form?

Concrete engraves its skin with the traces of its
trajectory. Just as ruins do, it gives the observer
a glimpse on what was once there.
In the mid-1950s Chandigarh, a vast amount of
concrete was poured into the formwork on towering
wooden supports, with buckets being carried and
emptied repeatedly by lines of the local laborers.
"…If any part of the concrete surface…was touched
up, even by mistake, and it came to the notice of
Jeanerette, he would shout and scream at the
engineers and workers involved saying, 'You, gentleman,
have made a palace look like a hut after
touching it up. Please do not do it again.'" 3
Photographs of the construction process, containing
images of workers, had been carefully
removed from the press. The concrete surface is
not linked to events that contributed to its creation.
Instead, it is dedicated to the abstraction intended
by the architect. Here, architecture is what appears
at the time of completion."It certainly remains a
paradox that Le Corbusier's lack of interest in
seeing the building process documented remained
adamant at the very moment when he had begun
to highlight its traces in the built works themselves." 4
Half a century later, a small hut named The Truffle
was built out of concrete on a coast in Spain.
Ensamble Studio, the architects who are also
builders, piling up the straw for the inner frame
while heaping up the soil for the outer rim. In
contrast to Chandigarh's, the entire construction
process had been edited and published as part
of the architecture.
