Hush, how still! Yonder from the ballroom the pleasure sounds no longer; no voice, no
tone penetrates the night's calm.
Far in the west the moon shortly will cast the last glance across the earth, which under the
snow’s lilies sleeps in dreams of forgetfulness.
The ball is ended; but in thought I still see among those white figures, that glide through
the rows, a graceful young sylph!
Soon the moon will have declined, then sleep's arms will embrace me, then the soul could
drift freely on the sea of dream with the treasures of memory!
MOONLIGHT MOOD
(Presented the 7th of April)
The moon shines pale and colorless in the silent winter night. If only it could gently and
for a time penetrate the heart's night!
If it could with silver-tinted light gently and softly, as here, pour quiet peace into the
mind, to lay forgetfulness over the memory!
Moon! Thanks for this calm, which has lived recently in the soul! Thanks for the
moment's relief!
Oh, but peace should live permanently there,--then I might forget the heart's most
precious memory!
