4. MODELLING OF A COMPLEX 8-SATIN WEAVE CMC<br />

A recognition of the generic architecture of 8 Harness Sat<strong>in</strong> weave is required that bears<br />

close resemblance with the actual morphology of the material such as shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 20.<br />

The architecture shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 21(a) has been used here for modell<strong>in</strong>g as it follows the<br />

sequence seen <strong>in</strong> the micrograph <strong>in</strong> Figure 20(a) which shows the top side of the sample used<br />

for the thermal diffusivity measurement <strong>in</strong> the experimental rig described earlier.<br />

It is also important to specify the stack<strong>in</strong>g sequence and orientation of each lam<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> the<br />

composite lam<strong>in</strong>ate tested s<strong>in</strong>ce the effects of the off-set lay up of multiple lam<strong>in</strong>ae <strong>in</strong> a<br />

composite lam<strong>in</strong>ate does have effects on the analyses. Woo and Goo [17] have effectively<br />

proven this parameter as quite dom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g for, at least, through-thickness measurement. But<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to establish the basic sequence of modell<strong>in</strong>g and analysis methodology, a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

lam<strong>in</strong>a is used <strong>in</strong> this simulation. A RVE Unit Cell is chosen from this s<strong>in</strong>gle lam<strong>in</strong>a and not<br />

of the stack <strong>in</strong> a lam<strong>in</strong>ate which will form the next phase of this study <strong>in</strong> regards to<br />

computational challenges <strong>in</strong>volved.
