The <strong>Passiflora</strong> coriacea Complex<br />

A principal components analysis (PCA) <strong>of</strong> the entire morphological data set<br />

(Tab. 5.6) for the P. coriacea complex is presented in Fig. 5.4. Species that are<br />

recognized in this revision as P. coriacea, P. megacoriacea, and P. sexocellata<br />

are included and labeled accordingly. Principal components I, II, and III account<br />

for 30.8%, 19.2%, and 10.5% <strong>of</strong> the variation, respectively, for a total <strong>of</strong> 60.5%.<br />

Principal component axis I is most highly influenced by (presented in decreasing<br />

order <strong>of</strong> component loadings) (Tab. 5.7): (1) degree that the leaf is peltate, (2)<br />

stipe length, and (3) androgynophore length. Axis II is most highly influenced by<br />

(1) degree that the leaf is peltate, (2) leaf width, and (3) length <strong>of</strong> the lateral leaf<br />

lobe, and axis III by (1) pedicel length, (2) number <strong>of</strong> filaments in the inner<br />

coronal row, and (3) length <strong>of</strong> the pubescence on the stem. The PCA plots <strong>of</strong><br />

axes I and II and I and III separate P. megacoriacea from P. coriacea and P.<br />

sexocellata. The first principal component (PC1) and the third principal<br />

component (PC3) consist <strong>of</strong> information from both floral and vegetative<br />

characters. The second principal component (PC2) has low component loadings<br />

for the floral characters and high component loadings for the vegetative<br />

characters and is primarily an indicator <strong>of</strong> the degree that the leaf is peltate and<br />

leaf size. The graphs in Fig. 5.4 place individuals with larger flowers that have<br />

short floral stipes and long pedicels and larger leaves that are less peltate with<br />

narrower lateral lobes in the right half <strong>of</strong> the scatter plots.<br />

A PCA analysis <strong>of</strong> the data set for the P. coriacea complex based on floral<br />

characters (Tab. 5.6) is presented in Fig. 5.5. Principal components I, II, and III<br />

account for 41.5%, 16.6%, and 12.0% <strong>of</strong> the variation, respectively, for a total <strong>of</strong>
