reddish purple tinge; stigmas 0.7-1.6 mm in diameter; ovary 1.3-3.7 mm long,<br />

1.4-2.7 mm wide, widely ellipsoid to globose, greenish yellow. Berry 14.4-26.0<br />

mm long, 12.5-19.00 mm wide, widely ellipsoid to ovoid, greenish yellow with<br />

white spots, becoming s<strong>of</strong>t at the base at maturity. Seeds ca. 10, widely elliptic<br />

in outline, 5.0-6.1 mm long, 2.1-2.7 mm wide, 1.3-1.9 mm thick, acute at both<br />

ends, reticulate-foveate with each face marked with 12-24 foveae. Germination<br />

type epigeal. Chromosome number: 2n=12 (Snow & MacDougal, 1993). Fig.<br />

Distribution and Ecology<br />

Belize, in the districts <strong>of</strong> Cayo and Corozal; Guatemala in the state <strong>of</strong> Petén;<br />

México, in the states <strong>of</strong> Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán. Tropical<br />

semideciduous forests (selva mediana subcaducifolia and selva mediana<br />

subperennifolia); growing in shrubs or trailing along the ground on soil <strong>of</strong> little<br />

depth, lying directly on top <strong>of</strong> limestone; 20-500 m. Flowering and fruiting<br />

September to June.<br />

Vernacular Names<br />

Ala-murciélago (México), granadilla (México), mac-xiquin-zootz (México), and<br />

pepen-ak’ (México).<br />
